Sally Hawker, BA, PGCE
Bachelor of Arts (First class) English Language and Literature.
PGCE Secondary, Teacher of English.
I currently live near Bridgnorth, in the beautiful county of Shropshire. I've taught secondary English in a Worcestershire school for nine years and have tutored privately for seven years. I enjoy the relative freedom tutoring affords to truly engage with the individual student.
Many of my tutees aspire to improve their grades and some are ambitious to excel academically, as a stepping-stone to further education and training- and ultimately to their chosen careers. As an experienced examiner, I have been very successful at helping young people achieve their personal academic goals, whatever those might be.
I also have a particular interest in promoting self-directed learning where it is appropriate, and delight in encouraging young people to find the aspects of English that are relevant to their own lives and interests, whether this be through the enjoyment of their choice of fiction, or through non-fiction writing- opening up a world of agency, to affect the topics that interest them most.
A more student-centred approach to teaching can be particularly beneficial to neuro-diverse students, students with complex histories, and to the broad spectrum of young people who have found themselves disenchanted with a conventional model of schooling. I therefore enjoy working with students who have experienced alternative settings, including those who are home-schooled, to help them find an approach to education that nurtures their individual potential to enjoy learning again.
